Free-For-All tours wrap up, Halloween ahead at Felt

Scores of people walked around the Felt Estate and through the rooms in the historic Felt Mansion on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2025, as part of the final Free-For-All tour event of the season.

Tours with admission fees continue through December.

Free tours

Admission for the Sept. 7 event was at no cost and visitors could explore the Felt Mansion, Carriage House, water garden, and chapel.

One of the special visitors was Constance Lochridge, great-granddaughter of Dorr and Agnes Felt. Lochridge and her husband Scott, who live in Tennessee, were touring the Midwest and stopped at the mansion to share historical Felt family photos.

The Free-For-All events, the first Sunday of the month during the summer, started in 2024 as a way to share local history and thank the community for its support in the restoration process.

Tours still available

Tours with admission charges are still available throughout the fall and early winter.

Self-guided tours are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors (60 and older), $5 for children 8 and older, and children 7 and under are free. Tickets may be purchased upon arrival. No advance reservations are required.

A self-guided tour generally lasts about an hour guided by a booklet including architectural and historical details about the estate. Tour times vary by season and are listed on the event calendar.

The Felt Mansion is handicap-accessible on the first floor only. Visitors must be able to navigate stairs to view the upper levels.

Halloween

Tickets are now available for the popular “Hauntings & History Nights” Oct. 24, 25 and 30 at 7 p.m., 8 p.m. or 9 p.m. Each session accommodates 30 people. No tickets at the door. Tickets are $32.

Embark on a journey through time as the estate’s rich history and supernatural phenomena intertwine. This year’s experience begins in the chapel where those who have personally confronted the spectral mysteries share their encounters.

Step into a realm cloaked in darkness, illuminated by the enchanting glow of candles. Explore the estate’s hidden corners.

During this 90-minute self-guided expedition, access areas rarely revealed to the public. And for those with a penchant for mingling with the ethereal, arm yourself with your EMF detector, infrared thermometer, or REM Pod and partake in your own ghostly quest.

On Oct. 31, elementary school goblins and ghouls can visit the mansion for indoor trick-or-treating from 3:30-5:30 p.m. This is a no-cost event, but donations are encouraged.

Wear costumes (no winter jacket needed) and visit after school to explore the mansion while collecting candy and other goodies.

The State of Michigan Department of Natural Resources from Saugatuck Dunes State Park will be hosting carnival games in the party tent.

About the mansion

Construction of the mansion began in 1925.

Felt’s wife Agnes died in 1928 after the house was complete. Dorr died a year-and-a-half later.

After his death, the estate became a seminary for the Augustinian order that was attended by Pope Leo XIV. After the seminary closed, the land became a state prison and Michigan State Police post before the property was purchased by Laketown Township.

The mansion has been restored and is a top historical and educational site as well as a wedding and event destination.
