From the Winter Newsletter: Taxes due Feb. 17

It’s cold outside so that must mean that winter tax season is once again upon us.

Winter taxes are generally due on Feb. 14, but because it falls on a Saturday this year, and Monday is President’s Day – the last day to pay this year (without a penalty) is Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2026.

Fortunately, not everyone waits until the very last day to pay their taxes. We do receive a significant number of winter tax payments in December as some people want the previous year tax deduction and some are either snowbirds or just prefer to pay when they get their tax bill. Regardless of the reason, we appreciate your payments.

If you’ve come into the township offices recently to pay or ask a question, you’ve likely been served by my friendly, very capable deputy, Sophia Poel. Sophia does much of the hard work, carefully processing each payment and performing all the complicated math to make sure all payments are properly allocated to each of the entities that we are required to distribute to.

It’s only the winter taxes where Laketown Township receives a small portion of your tax bill for township operations (1 mill). None of your summer taxes stay with our township for general township operating expenses.
