Board authorizes survey in preparation to sell Wolters House

The home inside a park in Laketown Township could be ready for sale by October.

The Laketown Township Board of Trustees on Aug. 13, 2025, unanimously voted to enter into an agreement with engineering firm Prein&Newhof to survey the parcel that the Wolter’s House is located on, and then set the lot line for a one-acre parcel which will include the 2,260-square-foot house.  The remaining one and a half acres will remain township property.  The Wolter’s House in Wolters Woods Park, 6281 147^th Ave., is for sale. The cost of the work is $4,000.

The township was earlier contacted by two separate church groups that wanted to rent the house for refugee families from Afghanistan. Those families found other homes, according to Supervisor Steven Ringelberg.

The plan is to keep as much of the 2.5 acres of the parcel as possible. That requires turning the residentially zoned land into a one-acre planned unit development which needs planning commission and zoning board approvals.

The township purchased the home, 6289 147^th Ave., from the estate of the Rev. Lloyd Wolters for $350,000 in 2022. Wolters and his family were instrumental in the creation in 1992 of the about 40-acre Wolters Woods Park that surrounds the house on three sides. The park has a playground, pavilion and walking trails. A creek that is part of the intercounty drain system runs through the lot and the township wants to make sure that it maintains control over it for drainage purposes.

In other business, the board unanimously agreed to authorize Prein&Newhof to award a repaving bid for the nonmotorized path along 147^th Avenue from West Wind Lake Estates to 64^th Street to Curt DeJonge Excavating for $141,050. The project could be completed this fall.
