A little rain didn’t dampen the fun at the final concert of the Felt Summer Concert Series on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at the Carriage House, 6597 138th Ave., at the Felt Estate in Laketown Township.
About 150 people opened umbrellas as they set up their lawn chairs to enjoy the music of Chicago Mule, a group from the Windy City, and contribute to the repairs at the almost century-old Felt Mansion.
Umbrellas opened as the band Chicago Mule ran its sound check before the final concert of the Felt Summer Concert Series on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at the Carriage House, 6597 138th Ave., at the Felt Estate in Laketown Township.
“Every taco, every beer you buy helps,” Executive Director of the Felt Estate Elizabeth McEwen told the crowd as she introduced the band.
Chicago Mule was the third of three free summer shows that brought more than 700 people over the three events
“Despite the thunder and some sprinkles, our community rose to the occasion and helped surpass last year’s beverage sales and donations total, bringing us over $5,600 closer to our goal for the $1.6 million exterior restoration of the mansion,” McEwen said after the final show. “We are so very appreciative of the continued support of our Laketown friends.”

A bus from the Interurban Transit Authority not only brought concertgoers to the show but, for the first time, brought them home. The township arranged for the return bus as part of its trial run with the Saugatuck-Douglas based transportation agency.

Free tours
The mansion was open for free self-guided tours before each concert.
The mansion will be open again for free tours on Sunday, Aug. 3, from 1 to 4 p.m. as part of the estate’s monthly “free-for-all” event. The free August tour is sponsored by Semco Energy.

Construction of the mansion began in 1925 by Dorr E. Felt, inventor of the Comptometer, the first machine that could do all four math functions — add, subtract, multiply and divide. The building was finished in 1928. Felt’s wife Agnes died that year. Dorr died a year-and-a-half later.
After his death, the estate became a seminary for the Augustinian order that was attended by Pope Leo XIV, then a state prison and Michigan State Police post, before the property was purchased by Laketown Township.
