Felt Mansion celebrates Mother’s Day

The Felt Mansion in Laketown Township is opening its doors to help moms celebrate Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 11, 2025.

Mothers get in free to tour the mansion, 6597 138^th Ave., from 1-4 p.m. The first 50 moms will receive a special flower.

Other admission fees apply. Adults are $10, adults over 60 years old are $8, children 8 to 17 years old are $5; children under 8 years old are free.

There will also be iced tea and lemonade, plus a raffle for prizes.

Tours with admission costs are Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Free self-guided tours are on the first Sunday of the month from 1 to 4 p.m. until September.

Concerts

The Felt Estate also hosts free outdoor concerts in July.

The free concerts are on July 10, 17 and 24 and start at 7 p.m. outside the Carriage House. The performers are:

July 10: 6 Pak, a seven-piece high energy, all female rock ’n’ roll band plays a variety of timeless music from the 1960s, 1970s and more.

July 17: BBOP – Big Band of Praise –is an18-piece band performing big band, swing, jazz, gospel and ballads.

July 24: Chicago Mule, a cover band from the north side of the Windy City, puts its own spin on favorite songs from oldies and rock classics to current pop hits.

About the mansion

Construction of the mansion began in 1925 by Dorr E. Felt, inventor of the Comptometer, the first machine that could do all four math functions — add, subtract, multiply and divide. The building was finished in 1928. Felt’s wife Agnes died that year. Dorr died a year-and-a-half later.

After his death, the estate became a seminary for the Augustinian order then a state prison and Michigan State Police post before the property was purchased by Laketown Township. The mansion has been restored and is a top historical and educational site as well as a wedding and event destination.
