Fight against invasives continues at park
Volunteers will again remove unwanted species on Sept. 6 at Saugatuck Dunes State Park.

Volunteers continued removing invasive plants at Saugatuck Dunes State Park in Laketown Township on Sunday, Aug. 24, 2025.
For Joshua Gilmore of Holland, the two hours spent among the trees and grasses was another way to enjoy the place he has been visiting for years.
“This is one of my favorite places to hike,” he said as he pulled spotted knapweed from the sandy soil. “I love this place.”

Sunday’s event was the third volunteer stewardship workday this season at the state park, 6575 138th Ave. The first was in March. The second was Aug. 3.
Liz Uppleger joined Gilmore for the workday.

Next event
The next event is Saturday, Sept. 6, from 10 a.m. to noon.
Tyler Lidgard, natural resource steward with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, leads the events. She explains the impact of invasives – the spotted knapweed needs to be stopped before it reaches the sensitive sand dunes at the 1,000-acre park and alters the dunes’ natural ecosytems.
Gloves, bags and tools are provided.
On Sept. 6, volunteers will continue removal of unwanted invasive species in the dry sand prairie at the park by hand-pulling spotted knapweed. Volunteers will be working in the direct sun, so dress appropriately and bring water.
Long pants and closed-toed shoes are recommended.
Meet at the small parking area adjacent to the Felt Mansion.
Register by emailing Lidgard at LidgardT@Michigan.gov.
Dates occasionally change and events may be canceled due to inclement weather and other reasons. Please call the park to confirm dates/times prior to your arrival. Lidgard can be reached at (517) 388-8517.
