Free radon kits available from health department

Radon is an odorless, invisible radioactive gas.

January is Radon Action Month, and the Allegan County Health Department recommends residents learn more about radon. Testing for radon levels within a home is important to ensure safe levels of radon exist throughout the home.

About radon

Radon is an odorless and invisible radioactive gas naturally released from rocks, soil, and water. Radon can get trapped inside homes and buildings and build up in the air. Over time, breathing in high levels of radon can cause lung cancer.

Radon can build up in the air in any home or building whether it has a basement, is sealed or drafty, or is new or old. There is no known safe level of radon. You should always aim to have the lowest level.
