Laketown Township’s Huyser Farm Park is part of a free National Trails Day Quest event.

The Radar Hill Hiking Club and the Rotary Club of Saugatuck-Douglas are launching a “Trail Scramble Quest.” Organizers will be on hand at the Saugatuck Douglas Area Convention and Visitors Bureau office, 95 Blue Star Highway in Douglas, from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 31, 2025, to hand out free Quest Cards. Using an app, participants are directed to local trails to collect clues for a message. Hikers who crack the code can claim a prize.

“The Trail Scramble Quest is an opportunity to become familiar with a selection of trails in our area and discover how to protect these natural treasures,” said Chris Clark of Radar Hill Hiking Club, an informal group started in 2021 and named after Mount Baldhead and the radar dome atop the dune. “Enjoy a day of fun and community spirit while learning about the vital role that local and regional organizations play in safeguarding our environment.”

The Trail Scramble Quest is an opportunity to discover area trails, learn trail stewardship, support land conservation and connect with community, according to organizers.

Huyser Farm Park, 4188 64^th St., is one of the eight locations included in the event.

The park is 102 acres with trails, a creek and pond. An organic blueberry field is also on the property and the berries are available free for the picking when they ripen in the summer.

The park includes unpaved parking, gazebo and portable restroom.

Dogs are allowed on a leash which cannot be longer than 6 feet.

The Quest will remain available for at least a year.

How to participate

The area Quest starts with the story that while an ecologist in Saugatuck-Douglas was trying to foil a mad scientist’s plot, an urgent message to local hikers was intercepted and broken apart. Quest participants will use a smartphone app to visit local trails, put the message back together, and claim a prize.

Starting at 9 a.m. on May 31:

Card: Each participant needs a Quest Card, and it has the first message fragment. Get one at the convention and visitors bureau. Some of the sponsors will also have cards.
App: Scan the QR code on the card and add the app to your phone’s home screen.
Trails: The app has directions to eight trails. Find the message fragments there and record them on your card.
Clues: Several more message fragments are hidden in the app.
Solution: Piece together the fragments and reveal the hidden message.
Reward: To claim yours (one per card), present a completed Quest Card at Landsharks, 306 Butler St. in Saugatuck, or 4 to 5 p.m. on May 31 at the convention and visitors bureau.
