Parks commission approves tree list for donations

People who want to donate trees for parks in Laketown Township now have a list of approved trees to choose from.

The Laketown Township Parks and Recreation Commission approved the list at its meeting on July 16, 2025.

The approved trees are red maple, catalpha, American beech, tulip tree, sycamore, white oak and walnut.

The parks commission is considering a donation from a private group that wants to plant a tree near the pickleball courts at the township hall, 4338 Beeline Road.

In other business, the commission:

• Approved spending up to $100 for a roof vent for the toilets at Wolters Woods Park, 6281 147^th Ave. The commission is making modifications to the pit toilets to mitigate the odors.
• Approved a weather cancellation policy regarding programs with the Outdoor Discovery Center. The Outdoor Discovery Center will make the call on any cancellations and notify the township.
• Heard a presentation from Steven Van Timmeren, research assistant at the Michigan State University Trevor Nichols Research Center in Fennville about ongoing pest control research at Huyser Farm Park, 4188 64^th St. “Huyser Park is very valuable for our research because it’s unsprayed,” he said, meaning the 6.5 acres of blueberry fields are not chemically treated. “Huyser is a piece of a large data puzzle we’re working on.”
• Agreed to have Chairperson Brad Laninga continue researching a gate for Farview Nature Park, 6257 138^th Ave., talk to staff about camera installation at the park and possible sheriff’s patrols of the parking lot. Neighbors are concerned about after-hours activity at the park.
