Planning commission leader steps down after 13 years

Randy Becksvoort thanks those who have given time to the township.
Laketown Township Treasurer Jim Johnson, left, who is also a planning commissioner, presents outgoing planning commission Chairperson Randy Becksvoort a certificate of recognition for his 13 years of service at the Dec. 6 planning commission meeting.

Laketown Township thanked Randy Becksvoort on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2023, for his 13 years on the planning commission. Becksvoort decided not to seek re-appointment to the planning commission after his term expires at the end of the month.

“It has been a pleasure to serve the township on the planning commission since 2010,” he said at his final meeting on Dec. 6. “When I joined the planning commission, we had a wonderful set of planning commissioners/teachers on the board – Bob Cook, Linda Howell, Bob Slikkers. Two of these were property lawyers by trade so, along with Ron Bultje, I had a wonderful group of people to absorb information from.”

Bultje is the long-time township attorney.

He also thanked township Manager Al Meshkin and Zoning Administrator Michelle Sall.

“I have had the great pleasure to serve with many other Laketown residents that love the township. No one does this for the pay. We do it for the love of the township. Thank you everyone that I served with,” he said.

Becksvoort encouraged everyone in the township to get involved at some level by serving on a board or volunteering.

Township Supervisor Linda Howell will appoint a replacement for Becksvoort and other township positions at the board’s Dec. 13 meeting.
