All Allegan County offices are closed today due to the weather conditions. Holland, Saugatuck and Hamilton public schools are closed.

Winter storm

Laketown Township is part of a winter storm warning from The National Weather Service through 1 a.m. Friday, Dec. 6. Heavy snow is expected with accumulations up to 8 inches with winds gusting up to 45 mph.

The warning includes all of Allegan County as well as Ottawa and Kent counties.

Visibility may drop below a quarter mile due to falling and blowing snow. The strong winds and the weight of snow on tree limbs have downed power lines and have caused power outages.

Travel could be very difficult, according to the weather service.

From the sheriff, road crews

The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office posted Thursday morning on its Facebook page that it is “recommending the general public avoid operating vehicles on the roadways unless absolutely necessary until road commission crews can clear the roadways or the weather begins to improve.”

The Allegan County Road Commission posted on its Facebook page Thursday morning that many trees and wires are down in area roadways.

“Our crews are out and plowing but it is taking a lot of extra time with all the trees. We are advising that if you don’t have to travel today stay home and safe. If you have to travel use extreme caution as visibility is near zero,” the road commission said in its post.

The National Weather Service states that if you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency and be prepared for rapid changes in weather, visibility, and road conditions.
